What has stayed over eight years

Much has changed in that time: colour techniques have become gentler, lightening more precise, and whatever passes through the salons as a trend changes every season anyway. I keep training regularly so as to handle it all skilfully — that is part of the craft.

What has stayed is the reason I began back then: the calm. Here you may arrive, switch off and let your mind wander for a few hours — confidential, unobtrusive, with no glancing at the clock. Eight years on I know the sums work out: not because a great many people sit here in a single day, but because so many come back.

Much of it consists of questions I am asked in the salon anyway. Here you can read up calmly whenever it suits you — and at your next appointment there is more time for what concerns your hair alone.

Lying rather than sitting

Anyone who has ever lain at a basin with a tense neck knows the problem: the rim presses, the head finds no rest, and instead of relaxing you count the minutes. The Variolore Space can be adjusted in its recline, so that back, neck and legs are supported — the cervical spine stays straight, and the head rests in the recess rather than balancing on it. If you like, you lie almost flat; if you prefer to sit more upright, just say so.

That sounds like a small thing, but it makes a difference during longer appointments in particular. A colour needs its time, and anyone who lies at the basin several times along the way will feel by late afternoon exactly how they were lying. For clients with a sensitive neck the adjustable recline is more than comfort: it decides whether the washing is pleasant or something to be endured. Do tell me if anything presses — the chair can be adjusted at any time, including halfway through.

The road to a chair of my own

I began in the year 2000. In 2005 I came to Germany, in 2008 I completed my training here in Düsseldorf, and in 2013 I qualified as a master hairdresser. Since 2015 bridal and wedding hair has been part of my work as well. Through all those years one thought kept returning: the craft is there — what is often missing is the time.

In the salons where I worked before, everything usually ran in parallel: one client under colour, the next at the basin, a third already waiting. That is no reproach to anyone, it is how a larger business adds up. But precisely what makes the difference falls by the wayside — the listening at the start, the calm in between, the gaze that is not already on the next person. At some point it was clear to me that I could not change this as long as I worked in someone else’s rooms.
